What is the difference between black and white overlays?

The black pads are made of silica, which makes them harder but also more brittle. The white pads have an abrasive material of aluminum oxide, which makes them more malleable, soft and resistant to abrasion.

Black overlays have a sharp abrasive shape, which self-sharpens during the grinding process. White overlays, on the other hand, have fine grains of abrasive material with a round shape, which helps avoid damaging the nail plate.

The black caps do not have a stearic coating that prevents organic dust from being retained. The white caps do have a coating.

Black overlays work well with wet nail dust. White overlays work better with dry nail dust.
